Four fifths (81%) of car buyers worry that a second-hand vehicle might have hidden issues that only become apparent after the purchase.

It is estimated that of the 6.9 million used cars sold each year in the UK, fewer than 1% of buyers use an inspection service. However, 89% of drivers surveyed agree that an independent vehicle inspection would provide peace of mind.

Stockport Car Supermarket, a family-run dealership, is signed up to AA Cars Vehicle Inspections and displays an inspection report for every car listed on its website and on its forecourts.

Geoff McKenna, partner at Stockport Car Supermarket, comments: “The biggest concern for customers when buying a used car is knowing that the vehicle is in good condition. This became even more important during the pandemic, when we started selling cars remotely.

£Although lockdown restrictions prevented customers from seeing vehicles in person, they could view an AA report card online for each car they were interested in, which helped us continue trading during a difficult time.”

James Hosking, director of AA Cars, adds:"The average buyer cannot replicate the expertise of a trained inspector who checks everything from the engine to the chassis. Many buyers want that level of scrutiny to feel confident in their purchase.

“This desire for extra reassurance presents a valuable opportunity for dealerships to secure sales by offering comprehensive vehicle inspections. It’s a proactive approach that gives buyers peace of mind, promotes customer satisfaction, and minimizes the likelihood of returns or demands for repairs.

“In this market, offering independent vehicle inspections is a no-brainer, value-add service for dealers. It shows that dealerships understand the importance of a customer’s vehicle purchase and are committed to protecting customers' interests every step of the way."
