The Association of Fleet Professionals (AFP) has updated its Dealer Standard, originally introduced in 2022, to set a comprehensive industrywide benchmark for fleet vehicle deliveries.
The revised standard reflects advances in car and van technology and aims to encourage broader commitment from dealers.
Richard Baird, company secretary and director at AFP, highlighted the need for this revision, noting both the positive response from committed dealers and the ongoing issues reported by fleet professionals:
"While many dealers have embraced the standard, inconsistencies and poor experiences persist among those who haven't adopted it. With this reworking, we want to re-promote the initiative."
The updated Dealer Standard now covers 34 points, up from 28, and includes detailed checklists for both pre-delivery inspections (PDI) and driver handovers.
These measures are designed to ensure that vehicles arrive in pristine condition, and that drivers receive a courteous and thorough briefing on vehicle features, with an emphasis on safety.
AFP director Julie Summerell stressed the importance of addressing the growing complexity of in-vehicle technology and the increasing adoption of electric vehicles (EVs).
“Drivers transitioning from petrol or diesel to plug-in hybrids or full battery EVs need proper familiarisation. Understanding factors like vehicle range and charging is essential for confidence.”
Denise Lane, head of fleet at Euro Car Parts and AFP director, explained that joining the Dealer Standard could help dealers avoid common delivery issues and increase business opportunities with large fleet customers.
She cited problems such as vehicles arriving damaged or dirty, with incomplete documentation, and drivers rushing through the process, which can be off-putting for customers.
Lane added: “Dealers adhering to the standard will gain insight into fleet needs and improve delivery processes, leading to happier customers.”
To promote the new version of the Dealer Standard, the AFP plans to hold webinars and events, while also reviewing the fee structure for dealer participation.
- The Association of Fleet Professionals (AFP) will share its insights with automotive retailers on how to make a success of the company car and van market at 2024's Automotive Management Live show on November 13. The AFP's chairman Paul Hollick will be joined by its joint deputy chairs Lorna McAtear and Matt Hammond - who also head the fleets at National Grid and Altrad, that collectively represent thousands of vehicles, as well as the wider interests of the organisation's members across the UK.
