Audi has launched a new 2.7 TDI engine which will be added to its A6 saloon range this month.

The new lightest in class, six-cylinder common rail 2.7 TDI unit with 178bhp is essentially a downsized version of the all-new 3.0 TDI, currently powering A6 and A8 saloon models.

The new A6 2.7 TDI SE with six-speed manual gearbox will accelerate from rest to 62mph in 8.1secs and will reach a top speed of 141mph.

New technology in the engine enables full compliance with EU4 emissions regulations without the use of a particulate filter, and also helps the A6 2.7 TDI to benefit from a lower tax liability.

In common with all A6 Saloon models, the A6 2.7 TDI will from next month offer the extra cost option of adaptive air suspension. Based on the system fitted to the A8 luxury saloon since launch, the air suspension set-up features continuously variable damping to suit prevailing road conditions, and also offers the option of four pre-determined suspension settings which can be selected by the driver via the Multi Media Interface System (MMI).

The A6 2.7 TDI will be available in both SE and S line trim. SE specification includes 16-inch alloy wheels, remote control central locking, electronic climate control, electric front and rear windows and mirrors, cruise control, a 160-watt sound system with glove box-mounted CD player and the MMI Basic Plus control system with 6.5-inch monitor.

S line models add 18-inch alloy wheels, unique S line sports suspension, sports seats with black leather/Speed cloth combination upholstery, a sports steering wheel and special S line grille and interior badging. An additional S line exterior styling package is also available for S line models only at an extra cost of £1,100 (£875 for 4.2 quattro versions).

Available to order now, prices start from £26,330 OTR.
