Mitsubishi has brought forward by a month the UK launch of the new Shogun to May 8 after running short of the outgoing model.

Paul Williams, Mitsubishi sales and marketing director, hopes that spreading Shogun across three ranges (with Pinin and Sport) would bolster sales. Last year, Shogun slumped to 2,575 units, after peaking in 1996 at 6,693.

Mr Williams expects to sell some 6,800 models this year - 3,500 Pinins, 1,800 Sports and 1,500 Shoguns.

Prices start at £24,995 for the GLX, rising to £37,995 for the 3.5 V6 GDI 5dr. Two new engines are available: 3.2-litre DI-D and 3.5 GDI petrol unit.
