Joining manufacturers defending the environmental credentials of supposed automotive pariahs, Mitsubishi boasts that its Outlander’s CO2 emissions are lower than any other seven-seat SUV.

It has combined fuel consumption of 40.9mpg and CO2 emissions of 183g/km.

The Warrior is the second in the spec line-up, above the Equippe and at a £2,751 price premium which brings with it 18-inch alloys, side curtain airbags, cruise control, Bluetooth handsfree
telephone kit, leather steering wheel and chrome fittings in additional equipment.

The Outlander also has a rear bench that folds into the load area floor, offering seven seats in total.

The drive of the Outlander is impressive: a smooth transmission, allied to a powerful engine and great roadholding and handling.

Price: £22,749
Rivals: Peugeot 4007, Nissan X-Trail, Citroën C-Crosser
