Review
The Peugeot 307 is now available with the 110bhp HDi turbo diesel engine, and the option of an automatic gearbox on 1.6 litre and 2.0 litre petrol engine models. And the 307 is now also available with ESP - the dynamic stability control system.
The range is offered with six engine options: three petrol, and three diesel, all of which meet Euro-3 emission standards. The new 2.0-litre HDi turbo diesel 110bhp unit produces 110 bhp at 4,000 rpm, and maximum torque to 188lb-ft, peaking at only 1,750 rpm. It returns 54.3mpg on the official combined cycle, and 138 g/km of CO².
The engine also incorporates a particulate exhaust filter. First seen on the Peugeot 607, this traps and burns off 95% of carbon and hydrocarbon particulates to virtually eliminate local environmental effects. The 307 2.0-litre HDI reaches 62 mph from standstill in 10.9 seconds (3 door version), with a top speed of 119 mph.
The three-door HDi costs £16,160 OTR, the five-door GLX version, £16,060 and the XSi £16,660. All have digital air conditioning.
There is also now an electronically controlled, 'Porsche Tiptronic System' gearbox as an option on current 1.6 and 2.0 litre petrol models.
This AL4 'autoactive' gearbox has four forward gears, and the electronic management of gear selection takes into account driving style, road surface, vehicle load and temperature. It provides either fully automatic use with conventional park, reverse, neutral and drive functions - or sequential control to deliver clutch-less manual selection. There are also two locked programmes for 'sporty' driving, or for when there's snow and ice on the road.
The Peugeot 307 is one of the first cars to feature the new Bosch 5.7 ESP system. It not only manages and improves the car's existing anti-lock braking (ABS) and electronic brake force distributor (EBFD) systems, but also adds two new safety features: traction control (ASR), and dynamic stability control (CDS).
Prices for the Peugeot 307 with automatic transmission start at £13,510 for the LX auto 1.6 16v and includes three years' of warranty cover. The 307 is currently available with two years' 0% finance with 35% deposit.
