Volkswagen is gearing up to unveil its future entry-level electric model, with an ambitious £17,000 price tag in March, with the production version set to debut in 2027.
Speaking about the significance of the move, Volkswagen brand CEO Thomas Schäfer said: “With the results of the negotiations in December, we have embarked on the largest future plan in the history of Volkswagen. We are now following an ambitious course to reach the targets we’ve agreed on, making electro-mobility attractive for everyone- our brand’s clear goal.”
The new entry-level electric model is part of Volkswagen's larger strategy to provide low-cost, high-quality , European-made electric vehicles. Schäfer called it “the Champions League of automobile manufacturing.”
The new EV will be produced at the car maker’s Wolfsburg plant and will be based on a new version of the MEB (modular electric drive) platform. The first model based on that platform will be the ID. 2all production version in 2026, priced at under £21,000. In addition to the entry-level model, Volkswagen’s future plan includes the development of electric compact vehicles based on its Scalable Systems Platform (SSP).
At the Wolfsburg plant, major changes are underway, with plans for new technologies and production procedures. Schäfer said: “The Wolfsburg plant has a clear perspective for the future... we will be making Wolfsburg the capital of our new all-electric compact class.”
As part of its ‘triple A’ strategy, the business aims to launch nine new models by 2027, including the ID. 2all and the new entry-level electric car.
