The National Franchised Dealers Association (NFDA) has submitted its response to the Government’s consultation on the UK's transition to zero-emission vehicles, incorporating the dealership community’s insights ahead of the 18 February deadline.
In its submission, NFDA reaffirmed dealers' commitment to electrification while stressing the essential role hybrids must play between 2030 and 2035. The association also called for a clear distinction between cars and commercial vehicles, highlighting the unique challenges for vans and trucks.
NFDA warned that current measures to boost demand for zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs) are inadequate and require urgent improvement in areas such as: direct fiscal incentives; infrastructure investment; grid connectivity; and public awareness campaigns.
With over 4,500 franchised dealerships and 540,000 employees, the automotive retail sector is a key driver of the UK economy. In 2024 alone, 1.953 million new car registrations accounted for over £68 billion in sales. However, market conditions remain challenging.
Sue Robinson, NFDA chief executive, stated: "The Government must take immediate action to stimulate consumer demand and address the distinct needs of car and van buyers. With ZEV targets rising in 2025 and penalties doubling for non-compliance, urgent support is needed to ensure a smooth transition."
NFDA said it has continuously lobbied on the ZEV mandate, engaging directly with ministers and policymakers and that it remains committed to advocating for policies that support both dealers and consumers in the shift to zero-emission vehicles.
