The number of people opting to travel in cars is exceeding pre-pandemic levels, according to the latest official statistics from the Department for Transport.

Motor traffic has reached 103% of its pre-COVID-19 levels, underscoring a strong and sustained reliance on private vehicles.

Meanwhile, public transport modes continue to lag behind with buses outside of London at just 70%, National Rail at 88%, and the London Tube at 75% of their 2019 usage levels.

Stuart James, chief executive of the Independent Garage Association (IGA), noted: "The latest data from the Department for Transport highlights a critical shift in how the public is choosing to travel post-pandemic.

“The sustained increase in car usage presents a significant opportunity for the independent garage sector. As more people rely on their personal vehicles, the demand for maintenance, repairs, and overall vehicle care will continue to grow."

The IGA highlighted the importance of this trend for independent garages nationwide, pointing to data from the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA), which revealed that the average car in the UK is now 10 years old. With a decline in new car sales, this average age is expected to rise, presenting further opportunities for garages.

As public transport usage remains low and private vehicle reliance continues to grow, independent garages, particularly in suburban and rural areas where car dependency is higher, should prepare for increased demand.

The IGA advises garages to adapt to this trend by focusing on maintaining vehicle performance and extending lifespan through comprehensive service offerings.
