Alan Gall appointed new SMTA chief, Sandy Burgess steps down

The Scottish Motor Trade Association (SMTA) has named Alan Gall as its new chief executive, succeeding Sandy Burgess, who has led the organisation for the past decade.

Gall, 52, brings 35 years of international automotive experience, including senior roles with Arnold Clark, Mitsubishi Motors, Toyota, and Rolls-Royce in Saudi Arabia.

Gall commented: “I would like to commend Sandy for his vision and leadership over the last ten years which has left the SMTA in a robust and secure position with a bright future.”

“Now, as I embark on this new era at the SMTA, it is important to remind our 1,300 plus members we are here to encourage, promote and protect their interests.”

“As Scotland’s largest motor trade body, we have a huge role to play in how we can assist our members whether it be the largest motor groups or a small MOT station in a remote part of the country.”

“With around one in eight people in Scotland employed in the motor industry or related trades, I will also be looking to work with government, other trade bodies and relevant associations to influence and shape the future of our industry.”

Gall added that he is keen to be a voice not only for the trade members but also for the general public: “The vast majority of the general public are customers of SMTA members, and at the end of the day SMTA members want to provide the best service possible for their customers. As the trade body representing our members, it is imperative we also provide some representation on behalf of the public.”
