Volkswagen has revealed its fourth generation Golf R ahead of the Frankfurt Motor Show next month.

The new model is powered by a 296bhp 2.0 TSI and will hit 0-62mph in less than five seconds when equipped with the six-speed DSG automatic transmission. The top speed is limited to 155mph and the Golf R is also fitted with VW Group’s 4Motion permanent all-wheel drive Haldex system.

The all-wheel drive system eliminates slip on the wheels so maximum torque can be sent to each axle, depending on driving situation and conditions.

The Golf R has been dropped by 5mm compared to the Golf GTI and drivers can choose between Eco, Normal, Comfort, Sport and Race driving modes. The driving setup of the car can also be customised with Individual mode.

Design features on the Golf R include twin exhausts, front and rear bumpers, wider sills, sports seats and 18-inch alloys (19-inch alloys or available as an option).

The Golf R will go on sale in the UK in spring next year and prices are expected to be below £30,000 for the manual and £31,200 for the DSG.
