Porsche is working on a rival to Ferrari's 458 Italia as part of its ambitions for growth.
The sports car manufacturer's chief executive Matthias Muller is reported as wanting to launch a mid-engined supercar priced around £250,000 to compete with the Ferrari and McLaren's MP4-12C.
Such a model, positioned above the 911 range, would play a small but important part in Porsche's plans to grow sales globally, which also include the launch in 2013 of a compact five-seat SUV, branded the Macan.
Porsche recently expanded its retail network in the UK, with the opening of Inchcape's Porsche Centre Portsmouth.
