Toyota will launch a new sports car next year and the FT-86 II concept, co-developed with Subaru, is the closest indication of what the production version will look like.
It’s not yet clear whether Toyota will resurrect the Supra name or come up with something completely different for the production version of the FT-86 II.
The Japanese brand said the new model marks a return to the passion for driving that has inspired Toyota cars of the past, like the 2000 GT from the 1960s.
Since Toyota stopped production of its Celica, the brand has been missing a halo product in its line-up, instead concentrating on widening its exposure in the family and volume segments.
The new sports car will inject some passion into Toyota’s model range.
Subaru dealers will also welcome a sexy halo car to its UK model line-up which will help to compliment its all-wheel drive products.
The FT86 II features a boxer petrol engine with a compact and lightweight six-speed manual transmission.
