The Retail Motor Industry (RMI) has appointed Stuart James as the new head of its independent garages division with immediate effect.

James has been with the RMI for three years, working with its training division Remit most recently. Prior to this he spent seven years at Carter & Carter in various consultancy roles finishing his tenure as head of technical training.

Before this, James was a technical trainer for various motor manufacturers, and prior to this, established his own business repairing automotive and marine across southern Europe. James started his career in the automotive industry as an apprentice in 1979.

Stuart James, Head of RMI Independent Garages said: “There are many new initiatives in the pipeline not least the launch of Trust my Garage in the coming months. I look forward to taking the support that we provide to our independent garages to the next level.”

Colin Parlett will remain as chairman of RMI Independent Garages.

RMI Independent Garages represents 3,500 independent garages and James will be tasked with growing the membership.

Rob Foulston, RMI chief executive of the RMI, said: “Through his success in integrating the MVRA into RMI Bodyshop, Stuart has proven both his managerial and technical competence. Stepping up to head RMI Independent Garages is the logical next step both for Stuart and the RMI."
