A Government website will give companies guidance on staff issues caused by the Royal Wedding.

The Business Link service said the decision to mark Prince William and Kate Middleton's wedding on April 29 with a public holiday had left employers pondering their committments.

The site tells employers they are under no obligation to provide additional paid leave under the European Working Time regulations.

It all depends on the wording of individual contracts, it said.

"For example, if an employee's contract says that they are entitled to, for example, 20 days annual leave in addition to all statutory, bank and public holidays, this would potentially mean they are entitled to an extra day's paid holiday," it stated.

BusinessLink is planning a new dedicated Royal Wedding business advice page: www.businesslink.gov.uk/royalwedding
