Fiat’s Grande Punto and the new Mazda5 have both been awarded five stars for occupant safety in the latest Euro NCAP tests.

The Grande Punto was awarded three stars for pedestrian safety and child safety.

The Mazda5 received just two stars for pedestrian safety and three for child safety.

The testers awarded the Grande Punto with 33 out of a possible 37 points for occupant protection.

In front-end barrier crash tests, the test car – a three-door Grande Punto 1.2 Dynamic – achieved 14 points (85%). In the side impact crash test it scored 18 points (98%). Two more points for the seatbelt reminder brought Grande Punto up to an overall 33 points.

The Mazda5 also scored 33 points out of 37 for occupant protection. In front-end tests it scored 13 points (84%). It scored 18 points in the side impact crash test (100%) and an additional two points for the seatbelt reminder.
