US President George W. Bush's major funding proposal for a fuel cell programme – announced in his State of the Union Address on Tuesday – has driven up the price of platinum on world markets.
Platinum, an important material used in some fuel cell semi-permeable membranes, was driven up as high as $673 per ounce in the aftermath of Bush's speech, according to today's Financial Times.
