The new style registration plate will lead to a surge in new vehicle registrations for September 2001 as retail and fleet customers compete to be 'first' on the road, predicts Manheim Europe.

Andrew Shepherd, senior group auctioneer, said: "This new style plate comes at a very welcome time for new car franchised dealers. They will benefit from an increase in new car sales.

"In addition, this will produce many part exchanges, of which some will become 'nearly new' and 'used' ready for retail.

"Following the new registration in September used car values should remain steady and, as present, any vehicle offering a high specification, low mileage, full service history and a desirable colour will command a high premium.

"It will probably be the poor end of the market, such as, 120,000 mile cars, ill-kept, non-desirable models and uninspiring colours that really struggle unless at giveaway prices."
