BMW has confirmed plans to invest £63m in a Rolls-Royce plant near the old Goodwood race circuit in Sussex and just 10 miles from the former home of the marque's co-founder, Sir Henry Royce.

The land was acquired from the Earl of March who organises the annual 'festival of speed' at Goodwood.

A BMW spokesman said development work was continuing on a new saloon and the group hoped to build and sell 1,000 a year.

BMW wants to establish Rolls-Royce as a luxury brand at the opposite end of its range to new Mini which is due to be launched next year.
