A nationwide survey reveals that half of car buyer (51%) will pay more for a used car if the previous owner invested in dealer-applied paint and interior protection.

Out of 1,000 car buyers surveyed by Autoglym LifeShine, 38% would be willing to pay between 4-6% more. Considering the average retail price of a typical used car in the UK, a 5% premium translates to an additional £835.

Notably, only 21% of respondents stated they would be ‘unlikely’ or ‘very unlikely’ to pay more.

The application of surface protection products also positively impacts buyer intent in other ways. In the Autoglym survey, 75% of respondents ‘agree’ or ‘strongly agree’ with the statement: “If the previous owner had paid for a surface protection treatment, I would expect it to be more likely that they will have looked after the vehicle.” Only 3% disagreed with this statement.

Anna Houldsworth, head of paint protection at Autoglym LifeShine, said: “This survey highlights the importance of integrating communication about surface protection products into all aspects of the customer journey – from the initial online marketing of stock to discussing features and benefits directly with customers. Doing so will engage customers more and increase the likelihood of purchase.”
