The German carmaker said that the Polo hatchback-aping design offered “a new interpretation of the DNA of Volkswagen icons” in unveiling images of the potential entry-level EV line-up introduction this week.

Volkswagen said that it was targeting a starting price of less than 25,000 euros (£22,000) with the new model, which is expected to go into production in 2025 and offer a driving range of up to 450 kilometres (279 miles).

It will also be the brand’s first ID model to feature front-wheel-drive in a compact MEB platform which liberates an impressive boot volume of 490 litres, despite its compact dimensions.

VW recently unveiled an updated version of its launch model from the ID EV range, the ID 3, which introduces a series of updates to its infotainment system and operating platform.

Since the launch of the ID 3, VW has expanded its EV offering with the subsequent launch of the ID 4, ID 5 and, more recently, the ID Buzz MPV and minivan.

This year will bring the launch of the flagship ID.7 saloon.

Commenting on the unveiling of the ID 2all concept Thomas Schäfer, the chief executive of Volkswagen Passenger Cars, said: “We are transforming the company rapidly and fundamentally – with the clear objective of making Volkswagen a genuine Love Brand.

“The ID. 2all shows where we want to take the brand: close to the customer, top technologies and a fantastic design. We are implementing the transformation at pace to bring electric mobility to the masses.”

VW said that the ID 2all would feature a powerful electric drive motor with an output of 226 PS.

The production version of the ID. 2all is one of 10 new electric models that will be launched by Volkswagen by 2026.

Among its new EV models, Volkswagen said it was working on a car at a price of less than 20,000 euros in a bid to meet its goal of claiming an electric car market share of 80% in Europe – up from a previous goal of 70%.
