WSG also shared a table detailing the largest 4x4 claims paid during the year. Land Rover models accounted for 14 of these high-cost claims, underlining the brand's reliability issues with WSG noting that while the maximum warranty claim limit per customer is £15,000, the actual repair costs exceeded this.

WSG’s operations director Martin Binnee noted the rapid growth of the 4x4 sector, with a 33% surge in registrations in 2023 alone due to their performance and versatility.

“The 4x4 market is accelerating at full throttle, driven by evolving consumer preferences and rapid technological innovation,” he said. “From booming sales to a shift toward eco-friendly hybrid and electric models, the dynamic landscape of 4x4 vehicles provides plenty of compelling insights.

“Over the past five years, the 4x4 sector has witnessed remarkable growth, with registrations surging by an impressive 33% in 2023 alone. This upward trend underscores a strong consumer appetite for versatile, spacious off-roading vehicles that cater to modern lifestyles.

“Reliability remains a hallmark of many 4x4s, but challenges persist. Notably, electrical and electronic systems have become the Achilles' heel of these rugged vehicles, accounting for nearly a quarter (24%) of all 4x4 warranty claims processed by WSG between November 2023 and November 2024. This reflects the growing complexity of onboard technology and an increasing reliance on advanced systems in 4x4 design.

“Among the standout models, the Land Rover Discovery garners attention for its unreliability. Yet, it remains a prime choice for families, showcasing diesel power, robust performance, and the practicality of a spacious seven-seater design. This blend of capability and comfort ensures its place as a top contender in the 4x4 market.”
