The Institute of Motor Industry (IMI) estimates that 11,000 technicians in the UK still need to complete the MOT Annual Assessment ahead of the deadline on March 31.

The IMI said those technicians that need to complete the assessment must act now, or risk suspension from testing and potential loss of income.

MOT testers who do miss the deadline will have to competently demonstrate to a DVSA representative face-to-face, in their place of work, their ability to carry out an MOT test on a vehicle.

Before they can book this demonstration test, technicians will need to submit a DBS certificate to the DVSA online. Technicians without DBS checks conducted within three months of the test date will need to request one, and these can take many weeks to be processed and a certificate received.

The industry body has created e-learning packages to help testers meet the deadline quickly with a three hour module that can be completed in smaller sessions.

The module enables an assessment to be taken twice, giving technicians two opportunities to achieve the 80% DVSA pass rate.

Upon completing the IMI MOT Training and Assessment, testers can opt-in for free IMI membership.
