Earlier this year, as some of the AM100 groups began filing their 2021 accounts, AM could see that major franchised dealers had clawed their way back up from the hammer blow that COVID delivered in 2020.

But together with our research partners Steve Le Bas and James Evans at BDO, our study of the AM100 as a whole shows the entire cohort grew revenues by 19% - it is largely back to 2019 levels, at £66 billion.

In the whole AM100 only a small handful of groups were unable to increase turnover. Perhaps some of these were partly due to their usually heavy involvement in fleet sales, which bore some of the brunt of the ongoing new vehicle supply issues.

A couple of groups strategically downsized too, shedding unviable or undesired dealerships. Significant acquisitions within the AM100 mean a few names have disappeared since last time.

That means a handful of new entrants have achieved AM100 ranking this year.

The profitability of the AM100 is astonishing too. For an industry which, in the ‘old normal’ conditions, achieving a 1% to 1.5% return on sales was an acceptable average, this time even the 20th-most profitable AM100 group made 3.4%.

  • Please note, the 2022 AM100 was printed on October 28th, 2022, and compiled through statutory accounts published at Companies House by October 21st or estimates where unavailable.
  • Eastern Western Motor Group, ranked 22 in this report, since published accounts showing £818m turnover, which would've ranked the group at 18.
  • Ocean Automotive Holdings was an erroneous omission from the 2022 AM100. Its 2021 turnover of £153.6 million would have ranked it 92nd, ahead of SG Petch.
