Audi is dropping the naming strategy which differentiated vehicles based on their powertrain, returning to the car’s badge being purely based on size and segment.

Internal combustion engine (ICE) models had been given an odd number and its electric vehicles (EVs) even.

The new naming regime system will start with the new Audi A6 next month (March), which will have the same name as its electric counterpart, the A6 E-tron.

Audi models will continue to be identified by letters and numbers, with 'A' designating traditional cars and 'Q' signifying SUVs.

“This decision is the result of intensive discussions and also follows the wishes of our customers as well as feedback from our international dealers,” said Marco Schubert, member of the board of management for sales and marketing at Audi.

“Our nomenclature now provides all customers worldwide with an intuitive orientation in our portfolio. We choose the names of our models in a way that reveals size and positioning at first glance.”

No retrospective name changes are planned concerning models already on sale.
