Mazda has revealed the new Mazda2 as it launched production of its next-generation car at its Hofu plant south-east of Hiroshima, Japan.
The fourth member of Mazda's current model generation features the full range of ultra-efficient Skyactiv technology underneath a design that is very close to the Hazumi concept car shown in March.
The new Mazda2 will make its European debut at the Paris motor show before sales are expected to start early in 2015. The small car sector is the largest in Europe and represents a big opportunity for the brand to increase sales.
In Europe the car will be available with a new small displacement diesel engine, the Skyactiv-D 1.5, as well as different power versions of the petrol Skyactiv-G 1.5.
Like the Mazda CX-5, Mazda6 and Mazda3, the new Mazda2 features weight saving and efficiency improvements compared with the previous generation of Mazda cars.
More information, including specification and prices, will be made available closer to the car's arrival in the UK.
