A brochure promoting a SMART repair service by motor accessories chain Halfords has been judged misleading.
Halfords had claimed its service, which repairs chips, scratches, minor dents and bumper scuffs, would "save at least 75% off bodyshop prices".
A complaint was made to the Advertising Standards Authority by rival ChipsAway, which provided two quotes from independent bodyshops and two quotes from Halfords which showed its service was not 75% cheaper.
Halfords said its claim was based on a rolling national pricing survey based on bodyshop quotes for actual vehicle damage. However its survey covered only five bodyshops in one month.
The ASA ruled that Halfords' claim was unqualified and told it not to repeat such claims.
