The European Parliament's environment committee this morning voted to set carmakers a 2012 deadline for average emissions of 120g/km.

MEPs also agreed to set a long term target of reducing vehicle emissions to 95g CO2/km by 2020.

The proposal will go before the Council of Ministers with the aim of becoming law by the end of the year.
