Hyundai has developed a new six-speed automatic gearbox that will be rolled out across selected models in its range from 2009.

The Korean manufacturer has said the new technology will help increase fuel efficiency by 12.2%.

The new six-speed went into production this month.

A total of five variants of the new system will be produced to accommodate a range of petrol and diesel engines.

A total of sixteen different Hyundai models will get the transmission, including a redesigned Santa Fe, which is due to arrive at the end of 2009.
