Volkswagen has built a prototype hybrid Touran, coupling its 1.6 FSI petrol engine to a 13.6hp electric motor.
However, the firm does not apparently plan to put the hybrid powertrain into series production, having found its consumption inferior to that of the production diesel version of the Touran.
VW Group has researched hybrid petrol/electric powertrains since 1986, but has reportedly concluded that they offer no benefit other than for car users undertaking several short-distance trips, and perhaps for the US market where diesel penetration remains minimal other than in the large light truck segment.
