The SUV safety controversy in the US has continued with the announcement by a safety/environmental pressure group that it is to air two anti-SUV TV commercials in key American cities.

The Detroit Project says the message of the ads is that gas guzzling poses a threat to “national security”. One ad links the vehicle segment to recent terrorist activity – hijacking airlines and carrying bombs to blow up nightclubs etc. The ad concludes: “So what if it gets 11 miles to the gallon… I gave money to a terrorist training camp in a foreign country.”

According to the Detroit Free Press, however, few television networks are taking up the ads.
