BMW is to unveil its first-ever diesel coupe next March – although it will be a further year before a right hand drive version is available. The BMW 330Cd will feature the new 3-litre diesel delivering 204bhp, which represents an extra 20bhp on the current 3-litre diesel offering.

This new powerplant also features increased low-down torque (maximum 410Nm at 1,500rpm), and and improved top speed and 0-62mph.

And the boosted performance is not at the expense of economy. Fuel consumption goes up from 35.3mpg to 36.7mpg.

The new engine will come with a new six speed manual transmission.

The coupe's styling has also been tweaked in line with the recent changes to the saloon and touring models last year. This will comprise a smoother bonnet and a distinctive new front spoiler punctuated with a new wider boot grab handle.

Prices for the 330Cd and other new 3 Series models – the convertibles and compacts – will be announced early in 2003.
