The Honda Accord may lack the charisma to be a credible Audi A4 or BMW 3-series rival, but the well-built and good-driving Accord is great value for families.

Basic 1.8 VTEC S on 99T with average mileage fetches about £6500 privately. Cars at independent dealers are similarly priced: a luxurious 01Y 2.0 VTEC SE with 11,000 miles is £10,500 and £16k will pick up a 212bhp 2.2 Type-R on a 99V with 40,000 miles. It's well equipped with sports suspension, 16-inch alloy wheels, alarm, immobiliser and central locking.

With any Accord, expect full Honda service history and check for stone-chipped bodywork and damaged alloy wheels.
