Ford is developing a range of external airbags to protect pedestrians which could make it to production cars in five years. Airbags have been fitted to a Ford Excursion SUV in the US to illustrate how pedestrians could be protected from frontal impacts. Volvo is also involved, with a concept car which has an airbag mounted at the base of the windscreen, while Jaguar is developing a bonnet which pops up in collisions with pedestrians.
