Daewoo Cars UK will not be fielding a candidate in the forthcoming General Election claiming the PR stunt was a distraction from what it should be doing – selling cars.

The candidate Liz Frazer (left), a BBC TV presenter, was due to contest John Prescott's seat in his Hull East constituency. She was to lead the 'That'll Be The Daewoo Party' using the name Farrah Deal and campaign for a “fairer deal” for the UK motorist.

However, the combination of press leaks and claimed soul searching by the company led it to withdraw its candidate.

A spokesman said: “We weren't committed to going ahead with putting a candidate forward before the story got out and was featured on Newsnight. The publicity we gained has surprised us, but we've decided to concentrate on what we're here for – selling cars.”

He revealed that Ms Frazer, Cambridge University graduate and mother-of-two, had been chosen from a list of around four 'personalities' recommended by an agency and that she had been “outstanding”.
