Peugeot’s new 408-badged model will ditch its saloon styling in favour of a new fastback design aiming to combine the best bits of a saloon, hatchback and SUV.
Based on the new 308 hatchback, the incoming model will be offered with a drivetrain line-up which includes 180PS and 225PS plug-in hybrids (PHEV) derivatives and a conventional 130PS, 1.2-litre petrol internal combustion engine (ICE), with a fully electric version set to follow.
The Stellantis-owned French carmaker has said that its new 408 will arrive in early 2023, positioned between the 308 and 3008.
Peugeot chief executive Linda Jackson said: "At Peugeot, we believe that life is better with allure. With its unique looks, innovative fastback silhouette and unbridled elegance, the new 408 is the perfect expression of Peugeot’s philosophy and inventiveness.
“Unexpected from every angle, it has been designed for lovers of cars and of life, who want to break free from the traditional while seeking responsible pleasure.
“It encompasses all of Peugeot’s technological demands – controlled efficiency and a connected digital experience – and all the emotions associated with instinctive driving pleasure and a peaceful journey."
A 536-litre boot will ensure that the 408 offer practicality in a car measuring 4.69m long, 1.86m wide, while Peugeot also claims that it will serve-up better driveability and efficiency compared to a conventional crossover.
Inside, Peugeot’s i-Cockpit cabin architecture will be in place, with a dashboard familiar to the 308 featuring the brand’s latest infotainment system.
Customers will be able to choose from a range of six paint colours: Obsession Blue; Titanium Grey; Cumulus Grey (Allure trim only); Elixir Red; Pearl White; and Nera Black.
