Family-owned regional group Stan Palmer has appointed Bernard Wharam as a non-executive director to help steer the group’s strategic direction as it builds on over six decades of service across Cumbria.

Wharam brings a wealth of experience to the group which holds Honda, Suzuki and Isuzu new vehicle sales franchises plus Ford and Mitsubishi authorised repairer franchises across three sites.

He began his career with Pendragon, later going on to own and operate Mercedes-Benz and Toyota dealerships in Cumbria and Hertfordshire.

In a twist of fate, Stan Palmer’s multi-franchise site in Carlisle now operates from the very building that once housed Wharam’s Mercedes business.

In recent years, Wharam has broadened his expertise as an automotive consultant in both the UK and overseas, as well as advising businesses beyond the sector.

Reflecting on his return to Carlisle, Wharam said: “Walking back into the showroom was a déjà vu moment for me, but my eyes are firmly on the future. I’m excited to work with Neil and the fantastic team at Stan Palmer to help shape the next chapter of this respected family business.

Managing director Neil Palmer said: “We have invested heavily in recent years in facilities and infrastructure, both to meet the needs of our franchise partners and to ensure we deliver the best possible experience for our loyal and growing customer base. Bernard’s experience will be a huge asset as we plan for the future.”

Group chairman Stan Palmer added: “We’re delighted to welcome Bernard to the board. His extensive industry knowledge will be invaluable as we continue our journey and evolve the business.”
