Volvo has opened order books for its new ES90, which features next generation electric vehicle technology to give it a range of up to 435 miles.

It’s the first Volvo car to be fitted with range anxiety-busting 800 volt technology that can ultra-rapid charge the car to add 186 miles in just 10 minutes.

The Swedish-brand said the ES90 doesn’t fall easily within an established segment niche, with hints of saloon, fastback and even an SUV.

The ES90 is the sixth fully electric model in Volvo’s line-up, joining the EX90, EM90, EX40, EC40 and EX30.

Jim Rowan, Volvo chief executive, said: “The Volvo ES90 combines our most advanced technologies with Scandinavian design and superior comfort, creating a true premium Volvo car designed to elevate your quality of life.

“It joins the EX90 SUV as one of our flagship models and cements our position as an industry leader in software-defined cars that harness the power of core computing.”

ES90 specification details

The boot on the ES90 provides up to 424 litres of loading space.

Fold down the three rear seats – all of which can be folded down individually – and the loading space expands to 733 litres. The 22-litre frunk at the front is a good option for storing the charging cables.

The ES90 comes with a panoramic roof that provides UV protection of up to 99.9%.

Customers can pick an electrochromic version that means they can adjust the transparency of the glass. So if a customer is travelling on a warm summer’s day and they want to ‘turn down’ the sun a bit to reduce glare and boost privacy, that can be done at the touch of a button.

A new infotainment system has Google built-in, which includes services such as Google Maps, Google Assistant and more apps on Google Play.

The 5G-capable system is powered by the Snapdragon Cockpit Platform from Qualcomm Technologies and is designed to provide driving-critical information through the nine-inch driver display and the head-up display.

The 14.5-inch centre screen display, meanwhile, gives access to navigation, entertainment, climate and more.

Safe Space Technology

The ES90 comes with active safety systems powered by an array of sensors, including one lidar, five radars, seven cameras and 12 ultrasonic sensors.

Volvo said this sensor set enables vision beyond human range to help avoid collisions and hazards on the road.

The ES90 also has Volvo’s driver-understanding system as standard, which can detect when the driver’s attention is no longer focused on the road and step in to support.

Pricing and further information on specification is yet to be revealed, but as one of Volvo’s flagship EVs, the ES90 is expected to be priced over £70,000 when the first models arrive in early 2026.
